Description
Best described here by our illustrations, this large Civil War military albumin photo is of a group of the hard fought light artillerymen of the 7th Maine Battery and was taken at the mustering out of the battery June 21, 1865, on the state house grounds in Augusta, Maine. On an 8 X 10 inch photographers mount with a printed title7TH MAINE BATTERY
with the notation
Photographed by S. W. Sawyer, Bangor Maine
. The mount is heavily stained, but the image remains with good contrast and is largely unaffected. With an extensive history too voluminous to do justice to here suffice it to say the 7th Maine Mounted Artillery saw action at the Battles of the Wilderness - Spotsylvania - Spotsylvania Court House - North Anna - Totopotomoy - Cold Harbor - Bethesda Church - Before Petersburg - Siege of Petersburg the
Mine Explosion
- Ream's Station - Poplar Springs Church - Fort Sedgwick (Fort Hell) - Assault on and capture of Petersburg - Pursuit of Lee and more, participating in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington before returning to Augusta, Maine for mustering out as seen in this rare original albumin photo.
